Sheffield Midland station was opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway Company, and became the city's main station in 1970, with the closure of Sheffield Victoria.

Sheffield had 3 routes to London in the early part of the 20th Century - the Great Central, the Great Northern and the Midland.  Now, only the Midland links the city with the capital  - the shortest and slowest of the three.
