Introduction

The Dennis Dominator was Dennis's first rear-engined double-decker bus chassis, and was introduced in 1977.

Dennis had been away from the bus manufacturing business since the last Lolines were produced in 1967, and the company's return was mainly due to the heavy-handed domination of the British Bus scene by the all-powerful British Leyland.

Background

The Daimler Fleetline is a rear-engined double-decker bus chassis built between 1960 and 1980. They were the second of the rear-engined bus chassis to be launched - the first being the Leyland Atlantean in 1958. Usually fitted with a Gardener engine, the type found favour all across the UK, and some also were exported to Portugal, South Africa and Hong Kong.

After the formation of British Leyland in 1968, the Fleetline and Atlantean were owned by Leyland Bus, and production of the Fleetline chassis switched from Daimler's home in Coventry, to Leyland in 1973.

London Transport's DMS type were Fleetlines with Park Royal or MCW bodywork, and were designed to replace the aging Routemasters. First introduced in 1971, the DMS' weren't popular, and the last example was withdrawn in 1993.

The last-built Fleetline chassis, former South Notts ECW-bodied SCH 117X, was destroyed in a fire at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre on 21 February 2007 after it had been bought for preservation. Fortunately, we filmed footage of this vehicle before this tragic event.

The Fleetline was superseded by the Leyland Olympian.
