We've all got important items recorded on videotapes, whether they are camcorder memories of the children, school concerts, sports matches or a wedding video.

One of the worries with videotape is that it won't last forever. Some of the VHS tapes in the Nova library that are 15 years old are already showing signs of aging - dropouts are appearing (a type of white snow showing old tape) and the sound is less clear. And that's with tapes stored in a professional environment at the right temperature.

What are the advantages between DVD and miniDV versions? Obviously, if you don't have a miniDV camcorder but have a DVD player, then converting your camcorder tapes to DVD is the way to go. If you have a miniDV camcorder and edit on a computer, then converting your camcorder tapes on to miniDV will allow you to edit them in with your new digital footage.
If you're in doubt, most people do tend to go for the DVD option.

What type of DVD is it? The DVD format offers a variety of recordable formats - we use the DVD-R format, generally regarded as the most compatible, playing on around 90% DVD players. DVD-R's will also play on PCs and Macs equipped with a DVD-ROM drive.

Before ordering, please ensure your DVD Player will play DVD-R discs. Some older DVD Players may not be compatible with these kind of DVDs. If you're unsure as to whether your player will play DVD-R, check the manual, or click here for a list. We will not be held responsible for DVDs which do not play in your player.

Why would I want to convert my old camcorder tapes to DVD
To save content - family memories, sports, entertainment. No need to fiddle setting up your camcorder No need to fast-forward through the tape to find the right scene. No rewinding needed after playback DVDs are smaller and easier to store. Tapes can be re-used. The quality of the original tapes are preserved on the DVD.
