What is a Podcast?

A podcast is an MP3 audio program delivered over the Internet, originally designed to be played on Apple's iPod - hence the name. Now, podcasts are downloaded from the net, and played on many different types of portable MP3 player - including watches and mobile phones. In addition, many people simply listen to podcasts on their PC, as soon as the file has downloaded.

What benefits do Podcasts have?

• Busy people can listen in their cars, on the train, in the gym - anywhere they choose.
• They can listen when they choose, and in bite-sized chunks.
• They can listen as many times as they like.
• Audio is a very personal medium, your target audience can hear the interviewees speaking in their own words, including their tone of voice. Think about how you feel you know certain radio presenters.
• More people will listen to your audio programme than would consume other media, simply because it is convenient, and it makes use of time that would normally be wasted.

Who else are using Podcasts?

As well as entertainment and news type podcasts, major companies like Volvo, BMW, General Motors, Heineken, Paradyne (formerly part of AT&T) and Microsoft are using podcasts to disseminate information to staff, partners, the press and the general public.

Sales and marketing staff can listen to sales briefings, product positioning and pricing news, competitor information.
