Look and Sound are Equally Important
Most Television Producers hail from only one background, such as cameraman or director. Their experience is limited to visual disciplines, which for television or film is not necessarily bad. Shooting music, however, requires a different mind set. Recording Artists live and die by their sound. Andrew White's commitment to emphasise the equal importance of "Sound" as well as "Look" has been responsible for Nova's success as Live Video Producers.
Music is Different
Shooting Music Artists live in concert is very different from a Corporate training programme, live Sports feed, or Feature Film. It is imperative that the Producer, Director and all crew understand the importance of capturing the event on the "fly". A live music concert is spontaneous. It must be captured in a way that preserves that innocence, yet allows for the Producer to "cover" himself. The technique must not disturb the creative flow, yet allow for maximum flexibility in Post Production.
How Important is the Moment??
Nova's emphasis in shooting live concerts relies on hiring the best crews and the finest "real time" Music Directors. Directors are encouraged to "punch their own show". All personnel are encouraged to "get up for the show" and to have fun with the event. As Producers, Nova sets the leadership example, by encouraging the crew to see the shoot as an opportunity to record the show in "real time". A special emphasis is placed on capturing the energy, spontaneity and magic of the moment. Nova's goal is to allow the artist to perform with the least distraction, encouraging the crew to be an extension of the moment, and to record the show in such a way as to provide the client with as much of a "safety net" as possible.
Production Values are paramount
Nova Productions is committed to using only the latest chip camera technology. "Telling a story" with the camera is crucial. Camera movement is encouraged, so that the shot is always taking the audience somewhere, as well as keeping them interested. The company insures that Cam Mate, Jimmy Jib and Steadicam technology, along with a strong emphasis on hand held skills are utilised on each shoot.
Andrew has said, "Music is the international language which transcends time and space. How can we do it justice without setting a mood. The concept of painting the video palette with a broad and colourful brush, begins with a creative lighting concept.
